Everything You Need to Know to Pass HSK 1 in 2025

According to Chinese Proficiency Grading Standards for International Chinese Language Education, below are the required skills and abilities for HSK 1 learners.

・Verbal communication abilities: Possesses preliminary listening, speaking, reading, and writing abilities. Can engage in short or passive communication on familiar topics and accomplish basic social interactions.

・Topics and tasks: Topics include personal information, daily life, diet, hobbies, etc. Can complete communicative tasks related to these topics, such as using simple polite expressions with different interlocutors and identifying basic information in public environments and seeking confirmation.

・Quantitative criteria: 269 syllables, 300 characters, 500 words, 48 grammar points.

HSK 1 Listening Skills

Able to understand short dialogues (within 80 characters) primarily involving Level 1 topic tasks, pronounced clearly with standard pronunciation, slow speech speed (not less than 100 characters per minute). Can comprehend basic information with the assistance of pictures, real objects, etc.

HSK 1 Speaking Skills

Able to master the syllables indicated for Level 1, with generally accurate pronunciation. Can use vocabulary and grammar relevant to this level to accomplish related topic expressions and communicative tasks. Possesses preliminary oral expression ability, capable of simple questioning and answering using words and common sentences.

HSK 1 Reading Skills

Able to accurately recognize the syllables, characters, and words involved in Level 1 language quantitative indicators. With the help of pictures, pinyin, etc., can read language materials (within 100 characters) related to Level 1 topic tasks and within the grammatical scope of this level. Reading speed should not be less than 80 characters per minute. Can identify the most common signs in daily life and extract basic information from simple notes, forms, and maps.

HSK 1 Writing Skills

Able to master 100 characters from the elementary handwritten character chart. Has a basic understanding of stroke order and writing rules for commonly used punctuation marks. Can copy characters with basic correctness at a speed of no less than 10 characters per minute. Possesses the most basic written expression ability, able to fill in basic personal information and write simple notes using simple words and common sentences.
