World-famous retired soccer superstar David Beckham has handed over his social media account to a doctor, Iryna, in Ukraine. Iryna, head of the regional perinatal center in Kharkiv, was a child anesthesiologist before the war. She has been working non-stop in Kharkiv since Russia invaded the country over a month ago. Kharkiv is the second-largest city in Ukraine. Russia has shelled the country since February 24, and Kharkiv has been one of the main cities to be targeted by the Russian army.
Iryna and her colleagues have been helping pregnant women give birth and saving newborn babies and mothers in appalling conditions during the war. She showed Beckham’s 71.5 million Instagram followers how devastating the situation is with photos and clips. However, she insisted on conveying the message that even though doctors and nurses are risking their lives staying there, they will not give up.
Beckham, serving as a Goodwill Ambassador for UNICEF since 2005, appealed to the public for donations to help the charity assist Ukrainian citizens and refugees.
