New research held by Plan International finds that more than half of the 14,000 girls and young women interviewed, aged 15-25 across 22 countries, have experienced abuse online. This online violence includes harassment involving explicit messages or photos, cyberstalking, insulting language, and other forms of violence.
In the survey, 20% of the respondents had left social media, and 12% had changed the way they used it after being attacked on the internet. These traumatized girls are being silenced and driven offline. Internet violence is disempowering women in the digital world.
However, it is frustrating that abusers have a great chance to get around punishment by simply creating new accounts. Therefore, more and more people are calling for governments and social media companies to account for protecting users in online spaces.
