Taiwanese goldsmith Yuyi Cheng won a bronze award this year’s Goldsmiths’ Craftsmanship & Design Awards in the United Kingdom. There were no gold and silver prize winners in Cheng’s category. He strives to integrate Eastern and Western elements in his pieces and hopes to use his success to promote Taiwanese culture through jewelry design.
The 32-year-old designer likes both Hakka and indigenous cultures and often draws inspiration from their strong artistic expressiveness. His award-winning design, which was inspired by the Industrial Revolution, celebrates the new Elizabeth line of the London Underground, the restoration of Big Ben, and the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee.
台灣珠寶與金匠工藝設計師鄭又嶧，今年在英國珠寶界「奧斯卡獎」的金匠工藝與設計大賽中拿下銅牌，但今年並沒有金獎和銀獎得主。說，他力求在作品中融合東西方的元素，並希望利用自己在珠寶設計的成就，推廣台灣文化。
這位 32 歲的設計師說，他喜歡台灣客家文化，也喜歡原住民文化，因此經常從這兩個文化中強烈的藝術表現中，汲取創作的靈感。他今年獲獎的作品為懷錶，設計靈感來自工業革命，主要是致敬倫敦地鐵的新伊麗莎白線、大笨鐘的修復和英國女王的白金禧年。
本文的goldsmith意思是金工的工匠，一些職業的「匠」人就是在後方加上-smith，例如銀匠silversmith, 鐵匠 blacksmith, 鎖匠是locksmith，到底這個「史密斯」是何方神聖？
其實，「-smith」在古英語中表示「one who works with metal」，也就是從事金屬熔煉工作的人，即「匠人，工匠」，所以從這個詞根可以擴展出各種各樣的匠人，但主要是以金屬為主。
有趣的是，word(字詞)+smith(工匠) = wordsmith，就是作家的意思。是不是同意作家也就是打磨詞句的工匠嗎？
