US president Donald Trump issued an executive order banning any transaction with the Chinese companies that own TikTok and WeChat, which will no longer operate in the US in 45 days if they are still owned by their Chinese-owned parent companies.
The popular video-sharing app has raised national security concerns among US lawmakers and the Trump administration, as a Chinese law demands that companies have an obligation to support and cooperate with the country’s national intelligence work. WeChat is also widely used around the world. Users in the US use WeChat to conduct business transactions with people in China.
It is still unclear what transactions would be banned, but an escalation of tensions between the US and China is clear.
