YouTube is launching a new short-form video creator, YouTube Shorts, to compete with rival TikTok. The creator enables users to easily make short-form videos of up to 15 seconds and upload to the platform. It includes a set of tools such as a multi-segment camera, speed controls, a timer, and more.
YouTube is also working with music artists and labels to make more of their content available for users to record with music via an “in-product music picker feature.”
These videos will appear in a row on the homepage. New “Create” icons will appear in the app on Android and iOS to encourage users to try the new feature. Users can swipe through videos on Shorts vertically on their phones, just like TikTok. The beta version of Shorts will initially roll out in India, where TikTok has already been banned by the government.
