If you have seen the documentary The Last Rice Farmer, you were likely impressed by “Uncle Kun-pin.”
Born in Tainan City in 1929, Uncle Kun-pin has been growing rice in Taiwan for most of his life. In 2004, two years after Taiwan’s entry into the World Trade Organization, the documentary film The Last Rice Farmer portrayed the plight of Taiwan’s rice farmers and drew attention to the need to revitalize the island’s farming culture.
Uncle Kun-pin was one of the impressive interviewees in the documentary. He was later appointed as a national policy adviser, and in 2021, the Taiwanese rice farmer died at the age of 93.
