The huge container ship Ever Given blocked Egypt’s Suez Canal since March 23, causing more than 422 vessels to be trapped at either end of the artery and waiting to cross. The canal is a key waterway for Asia-Europe trade. On average, around 50 ships pass through per day. The Panama-flagged and Japanese-owned Ever Given is operated by the Taiwanese firm Evergreen.
It is guessed that strong wind and human error might be the factors that caused the 400-meter-long ultra-large container ship to run aground and get stuck. Excavators and tugboats had been working for almost a week to free the megaship. On March 29, Ever Given was finally refloated, and the traffic between the Mediterranean and the Red Sea finally resumed.
