Half the Oscar nominations for Best Picture this year went to films that were made or distributed by one of three big streamers, Apple TV+, HBO Max and Netflix. For the third year in a row, Netflix earned the most nominations of any studio or distributor. The Power of the Dog, directed by Jane Campion, received 12 nominations, more than any other film in 2022.

However, the Academy seems reluctant to award the most prestigious prizes to streaming platforms. To date, no film distributed by a streaming platform has won an Oscar for Best Picture. Perhaps it is a reflection of Academy voters’ feelings about changes in the industry: they still pine for the golden age of cinema.
